Welcome

Welcome to the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at New Mexico State University. The electrical engineering program began as an identified curriculum in the 1907-1908 academic year and has grown to a department offering BS, MS, and PhD programs today. The Electrical Engineering Department was started as a separate department from Mechanical Engineering in 1914 under the leadership of Ralph W. Goddard. In 1973, the department expanded to become the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to recognize the new emphasis on computer engineering. The department name was changed in 1994 to the Klipsch Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to recognize the contributions and support of Paul W. Klipsch ('26). In 1995, the name was modified to the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering to recognize the breadth of the program. As of 2006, the Klipsch School has a faculty of 20 members, four staff, approximately 350 undergraduate students, and 180 graduate students.
How to Find Us
The Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering is found in two buildings on campus: Thomas & Brown Hall and Goddard Annex. Thomas & Brown Hall, which is named for Melvin Thomas (department head from 1932 to 1956 and Dean from 1947 to 1961) and Harold Brown (department head from 1956 to 1968), is the main building for the Klipsch School housing the department's classrooms, main office, most faculty offices, the Crosno Study Hall, and several research laboratories. Goddard Annex, which is named for Ralph Goddard (department head from 1914 to 1929 and Dean from 1920 to 1929), is primarily a research laboratory housing office and laboratory space for faculty and students. Thomas and Brown Hall's address is 1125 Frenger Mall located at the corner of Frenger Mall and Sweet Street, one-half of a block south of South Horseshoe. Goddard Annex's address is 1100 South Horseshoe which is at the corner of Sweet Street and South Horseshoe. The E&CE department office is in room 106 of Thomas & Brown Hall -- right at the center of the building on the ground floor. The main conference room is in room 108 right next to the main office.

Department Facts
At the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, we like to think that we provide “big school” opportunities with a “small school” atmosphere.
- During the 2005-2006 academic year, class size averaged 16 students per section and no class had more than 50 students in it.
- The students at the Klipsch School have a large number of scholarships available to them – over 30 different scholarships exclusively for our majors. For fall 2006, nearly every incoming freshman and returning student who applied for financial aid will receive some form of scholarship award.
- We have very few part-time faculty. Students frequently encounter senior faculty members as the instructors in freshman/sophomore classes.
- The faculty have an “open door” policy where students are encouraged to drop in outside of formal class and office hour times.
- The E&CE program has a strong “hands-on” component. All required core classes have laboratories associated with them. The senior design experience is an intense design class to produce an actual engineering design. Faculty members spend a great deal of time working one-one-one with students in the labs and classes. Student participation in co-op and intern opportunities is strongly encouraged.
- We have several internationally-recognized faculty members: Drs. Ramirez-Angulo (VLSI design), Giles (electro-optics), and Voelz (electro-optics), and Prof. Kersting (power systems) are Fellows of their professional societies.
- We have two recognized centers of excellence in (1) electric utility management and (2) telemetering and telecommunications that are unique to our program.
